Once on this Island
Once On This Island, Jr. A musical with lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty
the stats:
Directed by Matt Lundeen
Presented by Arlington Children's Theater
Cost: $100 to $130 from a budget of $500
Scope of Work: Design and build from scratch individual costumes for 27 actors over a period of 6 weeks
Director's Concept: Poor villagers from a Carribean island telling the story of Ti Moune, acting out all the characters including rich and poor, gods and mortals.
My Concept: Inspired by traditional clothing of Haiti and other Carribean islands, incorporating bright colors and patterns. The gods are inpired by festival dress, while the mortals are dressed in a more everyday style. Most are barefoot, in line with the director's vision of poor villagers.
How I feel about it now: This is my proudest work of costume design to date. Working with such simple shapes and common fabrics I had the budget and time to construct nearly every costume from scratch, meaning that I could really adhere to my own vision. The actors were really happy with their costumes as well, and nothing is more gratifying to me. Not to mention, having the entire ensemble barefoot meant I didn't need to concern myself about shoes!
